Birds and Mammals

Situated in the southwestern corner of Africa, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, Namibia is one of the most beautiful and fascinating countries in the world.  Extensive and sparsely populated (with one of the lowest human densities in the world), it is still unknown as a tourist destination compared with its counterparts in eastern Africa, but her attractions are unparalleled and the range of contrasting habitats is simply astounding.

The Namib Desert, at 80-million-years-old, is the oldest desert in the world, spanning the Atlantic coast for 800 miles.  Here, the red sand dunes, with some stretching to 30 km and reaching a staggering height of 350 m, are the world’s highest dunes.  The nutrient rich coastal lagoon, Walvis Bay, is one of the most important wetlands for migratory birds in the southern hemisphere and one of the best Flamingo viewing localities in the world.  The woodlands and savannah of the Etosha Pan, offer the best game watching in Africa.  Such an array of different habitats provides incredible contrasts and a wildlife experience like no other.

Namibia is not only one of the world’s birdwatching hot-spots (680 bird species recorded in the country) but, with its stark beauty, it is also a geologist's and naturalist's paradise.

My tour offers you an insight in to the culture and wildlife of this remarkable country.  It will take place during the end of the dry season, when game viewing is at its best and at the beginning of the rainy season when the first small rains will increase our chances of seeing Palearctic and intra-African migrant birds that follow the rain.
