Birds and Whales

This tour is designed to show you the best of South Africa.  This includes not only excellent birdwatching, but also an introduction to its unique flora, mammals, history, culture and above all excellent food and wine.  The tour will take place in September/October, which is spring in this part of the world: most of the resident birds are breeding, Palearctic migrants are beginning to arrive in big numbers, whales abound around the coast and wild flowers are at their best.

The tour is confined to the south western part of South Africa.  In the Western Cape Province, where we will spend most of our time, over 380 species of birds have been recorded, of which three are confined only to this area.  Of the 140 bird species endemic to the whole of Southern Africa, the highest concentration is found here.  Not only does the region offer spectacular birdwatching, but it is also a special place for botanists.  The unique and diverse Cape fynbos vegetation (meaning “fine bush” and confined almost entirely to this region) is classified as one of the six biomes of the world and is one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on Earth.  Fynbos hosts an astronomical 8 700 plants species, of which 5 800 are endemic.  The most characteristic plants of fynbos vegetation are proteas (the national plant of South Africa), ericas and grass-like restios.

If you add to all this natural beauty of the place, the Mediterranean-like weather, outstandingly good food, fantastic wine and genuine warm-hearted nature and hospitality of South Africans, you are aiming for a fabulous time and a holiday you will never forget!
