Christmas Market in Krakow

Christmas time is very special in Poland because it is still more about tradition and history than excessive commercialism and the Christmas market in Kraków is an ideal place to reflect this.  For a start, the Christmas market is situated in the Main Square of an UNESCO-listed Old Town and the largest medieval square in Europe, dating back to the 13th-century. Dominated by the Renaissance Cloth Hall, next to the towering St. Mary’s Basilica and fringed by colourful neoclassical buildings, the square is an architectural landmark in the heart of the city’s cultural life.  The Kraków Christmas market in this unique surrounding is very atmospheric and conveys the magic of Christmas.   The festive feel is enhanced by a chorus of Christmas carols, folk dances and performances on an especially erected stage in the middle of the square.

The tradition of the Christmas market in Kraków, and indeed in Poland, started centuries ago, and is firmly rooted in history.  In the past, local traders set up their stalls to sell Christmas trees, decorations, and ingredients for traditional Christmas dishes; and, let’s not forget that 12 different dishes (representing the 12 Apostols) is an absolute must on every Christmas Eve table in Poland!  Today, the Christmas market in Kraków is a big affair, but to guarantee the highest quality of products, the wooden stalls in the centre of the square are carefully selected and their number is limited to about 80.

Highlights include private tour of Kraków Christmas market with mulled wine and food tasting, the opportunity to purchase some Christmas gifts, handmade ornaments and decorations of unique designs, Polish folk show and dinner on the first night, one-hour Chopin piano concert at the Chopin Gallery and two evening meals of traditional seasonal dishes at one of the best local restaurants.
