Photography tours in the Highlands

This holiday is designed for general nature lovers who would like to photograph iconic wildlife in the Highlands of Scotland.  There are key species in the Highlands that drawn photographers from all corners of the globe, and we are here to create the best possible opportunity for you to photograph them.   It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner or an advanced photographer.  We will take into consideration your ability as a photographer and your fitness to guarantee that you obtain memorable images.

Although the itinerary is outlined, it is flexible to take advantage of the lighting, timing and weather conditions - the factors that can’t be ignored in the Highlands of Scotland!   This tour can also be custom-made on one-to-one basis to suit your time scale and the subjects that you would like to photograph.  It can last between two to four days.

Please note that this is not a workshop.  However, practical advice in the field will be given on the use of light, position, composition and behavioural aspects of animals to benefit your action images.

The most rewarding wildlife photography in the Highlands can simply be divided into two seasons: winter and spring photography.

During the winter season we will typically concentrate on six species:  Ptarmigan and Mountain Hare (both in their white winter plumage), Crested Tit, Red Grouse, Red Deer and Snow Bunting.   Other commoner species are also possible, including the Robin, Great, Coal and Blue Tits, Redshank and Curlew.

The spring season will also include six prime species: Ptarmigan, Red Grouse, Crested Tit, Mountain Hare, Red Deer and Black Grouse, but other species are possible, including Grey Wagtail, three species of tits, Wren and Dipper.

This tour will cover three most prominent habitats in Scotland: old Caledonian forest, the Cairngorm mountains and extensive heather moorland.

In addition, a two-day extension tour to the eastern coast of Scotland to photograph seabirds, such as Puffins, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, Guillemots, Shags, Arctic Terns and three species gulls, is also on offer.  Please ask for details.
